IDC has named finalists for its Smart Cities North America Award. All 23 cities are in the U.S., and three of them are in Texas. Texas landed on the list more often than any other state, with four finalist projects in three cities.
Arlington, TX is a finalist in the connected vehicle category, El Paso is a finalist in law enforcement, and Dallas is a finalist in two categories: smart water and smart buildings. Dallas has an advantage when it comes to smart city technologies because AT&T is headquartered there. (See AT&T leads rivals in smart city work.)
The analysts looked at projects within 14 categories, ranging from smart water to next-generation 911 services. Those categories were consolidated into seven broader groups, and within those groups the finalists were:
