Kagan: 2017 is IBM Watson coming out party

It seems like 2017 is the IBM Watson coming out party. You may have noticed their new television ad campaign showing how Watson and AI will impact, transform and improve company after company in industry after industry. Are you ready for artificial intelligence? Well, ready or not, AI is here and it’s coming on strong with IBM and countless other companies who are all planting their flag in this new growth area.

The new AI revolution has been building over many years, but is finally at the point where it is hitting the airwaves and introducing itself to us in many different ways. There will be many different ways companies will use AI. In fact, companies will use AI in many different ways.

Some ways will be out front, where everything will be out on center-stage. Other ways will be behind the scenes helping you do business easier. Either way you slice it, one thing is certain AI is real, it is growing and is here to stay.

That means we will see more advertising and marketing messaging from company after company wanting to make sure we know they are a player in the AI game. That means plenty of noise and things will get confusing over the next several years. Seeing through all the noise in the AI space is difficult today as every company is trying to be a player.

IBM World of Watson

IBM Watson is one of the most amazing examples of what AI will do for us going forward in industry after industry. But this is just one of many examples we will see and hear going forward.

Last fall I attended the IBM World of Watson in Las Vegas as a guest and a speaker. I was blown away by how far Watson had advanced. That was before this new advertising campaign began. Now, IBM is introducing Watson to the world. While you can only do so much in a 30 second spot, this advertising does do a good job of breaking the ice and introducing Watson to the world.

And this is just the beginning for Watson and in fact for AI. There are incredible opportunities for investors, workers, customers, governments, cities and companies in industry after industry. Some, we will see, some we won’t, but 2017 is the year AI is beginning to go mainstream. Ready or not, AI is coming on strong. So, buckle your seatbelts, we are about to move ahead at warp speed. Are you ready?
