oil and gas IoT
Learn about the key IoT use cases reshaping the oil and gas industry.

The internet of things (IoT) is currently providing a number of benefits for companies operating in the oil and gas space by making processes easier, safer and more cost-effective

Internet of things technology is seeing increasing adoption by players in the oil and gas sector. One of the key benefits offered by IoT is remote monitoring of plants and assets. With IoT technologies, the systems are connected to one network and programmed to relay information back to a device such as a smartphone or tablet that is connected to the same network.

Through these IoT tools, oil and gas workers can have access to information gathered to help them better understand how the system is performing. They can also monitor the systems and analyze key information from any location.

The implementation of IoT technology also allows oil and gas companies to make repairs at oil and gas in a safer way. The information collected from each system allows workers to conduct an active monitoring of the overall system. This is key for the companies as they can schedule repairs and maintenance activities.

Additionally, connected systems can be programmed to send alerts to other connected devices if they begin to fail. Alerts also can be sent when systems are about to experience a high-pressure situation, malfunction, or any other dangerous issues.

With IoT technologies, systems can be repaired and serviced remotely or even autonomously, which is key for those working with more complicated and dangerous systems.

Another key area in which IoT is helping oil and gas companies to improve efficiencies is asset tracking. The use of sensors allow the firms to monitor a large number of key processes including inventory and oil and gas shipments. These sensors provide useful information so the companies can know how many supplies are in the inventories and if any items are missing. IoT sensors can also be used to track shipments providing the exact location of each oil and gas shipment. Certain sensors allow companies to monitor the condition of oil and gas shipments, as they can track temperature changes and leaks.

IoT sensors are extremely valuable in providing the oil and gas companies with real-time data pertaining to the location of an asset as well as the state it is in. This key information can cut down inventory, downtime, logistics and storage costs.

Pipeline monitoring is also another key advantage offered by IoT technology. IoT sensors enable oil and gas companies to monitor and inspect pipelines. Prior to this technology, pipeline inspection was done manually.  Through the use of IoT, pipeline monitoring becomes more accurate. This technology will also reduce the risks posed by safety hazards and environmental concerns.

To see how these oil and gas use cases translate into real world deployments, check out these case studies involving global giant Shell, as well as Rockwell Automation.
