Smart city initiatives will allow Dubai government to boost its Smart Dubai 2021 initiative
Chinese vendor Huawei will develop smart city initiatives in Dubai following a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai Civil Defense.
Under the terms of the agreement, Huawei will work with Dubai Civil Defense to develop smart city solutions to leverage cloud computing and cloud data centers, software-defined networking (SDN), big data, business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR), unified communications, intelligent video surveillance and other technologies.
Under the Smart Dubai 2021 initiative, Dubai inhabitants will be able to access hundreds of local government services through a new portal. The initiative also stipulates that the Dubai government will be fully digital by 2021.

Dubai Civil Defense is focusing on the development of its e-services which provides online service access to vendors, contractors and business partners to support their operations.
Huawei has recently announced the launch of OpenLab Dubai, with the main aim of providing innovative solutions for IoT, cloud computing, big data, intelligent analysis, eLTE, converged communications and other new technologies.
The new facility will focus on the development of public safety, smart city, oil and gas solutions.
Huawei’s OpenLab Dubai, which has been jointly launched with over 30 solutions and more than 20 partners, will also focus on cooperation between enterprises, services, partners and customers in the Middle East.
Huawei plans to add seven new OpenLabs in 2017, and in the next three years will invest US$ 200 million and hire nearly 1,000 people, bringing the total number of OpenLabs to 20 by the year 2019.
