IIoT case study: Controlling driver safety through big data

A dangerous problem with an IIoT solution

One in five American adults has at least one kind of disability, according to a 2015 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study, drawn from 2013 data, says the disabled are the largest minority group in North America at 53 million people.

One service they require is transportation assistance to and from medical appointments, hospital visits, grocery shopping and other daily life activities. Promoting Special Care and Health (PSCH), a human services agency out of New York, helps 8,500 individuals and families by offering a range of integrated services, including transportation.

PSCH owns and operates a fleet of 145 vehicles ranging from sedans to passenger vans. With more than 2,000 employees, PSCH found that reckless driving was a widespread problem and that traffic accidents and speeding were hurting the bottom line due to injuries, higher insurance costs, expenses and damages resulting from poor driving and lack of supervision.

So PSCH turned to the internet of things and implemented a safety program that included a vehicle tracking solution from GPSTrackit.com, point system, driving safety training course and they installed a means of contacting authorities into each vehicle. All these programs were designed to work together to ensure the safety of PSCH’s customers and employees.

Using data to take control

GPSTrackIt.com’s solution, which operates on the KORE network, provides quick and easy access to information. It helps manage drivers by knowing when they arrive and depart from each location as well as monitor driver behavior with warnings issued for speeding, idling, or using vehicles for personal use. Additionally it helps protect assets by receiving instant notifications if vehicles are ever stolen.

GPSTrackIt.com also offers alerts and reporting for vehicle rapid acceleration, hard braking and sudden stops. In addition, the system can send text or email alerts if a driver isn’t wearing their seat belt.

How well did it work?

PSCH has regular Safety Committee meetings where they bring together insurance company representatives, employees, and the driving safety personnel along with the stats obtained from the GPSTrackIt.com solution. According to KORE Telemactics, the company has seen a significant decrease in speeding, accidents and injuries since implementing its solution to driver safety.

They have measured a 60% reduction in speeding incidents in a two year time span. Additionally, PSCH has implemented a fuel card reporting system that is tied directly into the GPSTrackIt.com system to help them gain complete control over their fuel spending. Reporting tools and timely fuel tracking data have given PSCH total visibility into the use of their fleet fuel cards. Now they can pinpoint fuel card abuse, reduce fuel usage and costs, control fuel-wasting driving behavior and cross-reference information from the GPSTrackIt.com system to verify locations and use.

All of these solutions have helped PSCH improve its safety record in the overall fleet as a direct result of improved driver accountability and reduced costs related to fuel consumption and insurance premiums.
