Nokia will make smart home product commercially available for operators by year end
Finnish vendor Nokia launched a new smart home solution that will enable network operators to offer new services to residential customers seeking a digital home solution for the “internet of things.”
Nokia said the new solution supports an array of sensors, plugs and other connected devices essential for the delivery of home security, automation and smart metering services.
The company’s smart home gateway lets subscribers monitor and control everything inside the home with a smartphone or tablet, including temperature and motion sensors, door and window sensors, smoke detectors, light switches and security cameras.
The Nokia smart home solution provides network operators with three key elements including a single device that acts as an optical network terminal residential and smart home gateway; a mobile application – on iOS and Android – to control the home; and an end-to-end IoT management platform controlling the smart home ecosystem.
Nokia’s new smart home gateway will be available to network operators by the end of 2016.
“With the rapid growth of IoT and an increasing number of smart devices in the home, residential customers are seeking a single solution that is simple to install and easy to manage,” Federico Guillen, Nokia’s president of fixed networks, said.
“The Nokia smart home solution offers operators the chance to get ahead of the IoT trend and provide customers with a simple plug-and-play solution that is fully interoperable with the leading Wi-Fi technologies and standards needed to manage smart devices and applications,” the executive added.
Telenor, Tele2 activate LTE-A services in Sweden
In other EMEA news, Telenor Sweden and Tele2 Sweden have activated commercial LTE-Advanced services over their shared 4G network in 108 municipalities across the country.
“This is a natural continuation of 4G technology and the next step in achieving higher and more stable rates in our network,” said Patrik Nilsson, network expert at Telenor.
Telenor and Tele2 Sweden operate a 4G LTE network through their Net4Mobility joint venture. The network currently covers 99.5% of the Swedish population.
