Sprint is set for a possible new rate plan launch on Wednesday

Sprint is gearing up for a Wednesday announcement that could ratchet up the market’s competitive pressure ahead of the always-important holiday shopping season.

Sprint is currently hyping the news on its website using the #SprintCountdown hashtag, with a recent tweet from CEO Marcelo Claure stating: “The other carriers are not going to like this … guaranteed.” The news is set to be announced at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT tomorrow.

Most assumptions are that Sprint will launch new rate plans, perhaps with some sort of guarantee feature, if Claure’s tease is to be taken at face value. In mid-2013 Sprint launched new rate plans that included its “The Sprint Unlimited Guarantee,” guaranteeing customers unlimited voice calling, messaging and data services for the life of a line of service.

Sprint’s move comes on the heels of T-Mobile US’ “Un-carrier X” event last week in which the market’s No. 3 carrier launched unlimited access to a handful of streaming-video services and altered its Simple Choice rate plans. The launch was noted by many as an aggressive marketing tactic that could tax T-Mobile US’ network resources and force rivals to make similar moves should it prove successful.

Sprint earlier this month began offering a free one year subscription to Amazon.com’s Prime service for all customers activating an eligible Samsung device. The Prime service typically runs $100 per year and includes discounts on shipping, unlimited photo storage and unlimited streaming of video content and songs. Sprint said the offer runs through Nov. 30 and is available to existing customers upgrading or adding a new line of service and new customers activating a Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note 5.

Late last month, Sprint rolled out new entry-level rate plans offering 1 gigabyte of “high-speed” data with unlimited throttled data for $20 per month, and added unlimited voice and text messaging for an additional $20 per month. Customers can add high-speed data access at $15 per gigabyte.

In total, customers would be receiving “unlimited” data, voice calling and text messaging for $40 per month. The plan also includes Sprint’s Global Roaming service that offers unlimited text messaging, unlimited 2G data access and voice calls at 20 cents per minute across 60 international locations.

Sprint earlier this month announced second fiscal quarterly results that showed its first quarter of postpaid “phone” net additions in more than two years.
