The Thread Group, an organization composed of in-home “Internet of Things” device manufacturers, announced the first phase of its product certification program called Thread 1.0.
Thread, along with security testing partner UL, plans to use software stacks from ARM, Freescale and Silicon Labs to test more than 30 products and components from Thread Group members to ensure that all Thread products “work together effortlessly and securely right out of the box.”
“We are taking another major step in bringing Thread-certified products to market, and ensuring that they are tested for quality, security and interoperability,” said Chris Boross, president of the Thread Group. “This is great news for our 210 member companies, which are anxious to start using Thread in their products.”
The Thread testing will be used to validate device behavior for commissioning, networking functionality, security and operation in Thread’s network. If approved by the organization, the products will receive a “built on Thread” or “Thread certified component” logo so that consumers and developers know which products are Thread compatible.
Thread also recently welcomed European lighting company OSRAM to its group. The move will give the organization a larger presence in the European market and provide a lighting partner for the connected home. OSRAM believes the move will help it more seamlessly integrate with other IoT companies.

Thread Group members include ARM, Big Ass Fans, Freescale Semiconductor, Nest Labs, OSRAM, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, Silicon Labs, Somfy, Tyco and Yale Security.
