Atlanta and Chicago tops in wireless performance; Omaha … not

Latest RootMetrics survey shows Sprint, T-Mobile US improvements seen across Tennessee

Live in Atlanta; Chicago; Knoxville, Tenn.; Nashville, Tenn.; or Jacksonville, Fla.? Then count yourself among the select millions enjoying the nation’s best commercial wireless communication services. Live in Hudson Valley, N.Y.; Reno, Nev.; Omaha, Neb.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; or El Paso, Texas? Well, you’re not quite as lucky.

RootMetrics released its latest rankings of the nation’s top 125 markets in terms of commercial cellular performance for the first half of this year, with those 10 cities making up the top 5 and bottom 5 on the list in terms of overall network performance regardless of market size. The rankings tap into RootMetrics drive testing numbers with results provided in both “unweighted” and “weighted” terms based on population.

Breaking down the separate components to the overall score, “network reliability” and “call performance” were dominated by Memphis, Tenn.; “network speed” and “data performance” found Atlanta on top; and Fort Wayne, Ind., and Stockton, Calif., took home top honors in “text performance.”

RootMetrics noted that Nashville and Knoxville showed strong improvements compared with last year’s results, with the former moving up from an overall rank of No. 79, while the latter improved from No. 69. While individual carrier performance was not a central part of the latest report, RootMetrics did note that improved network performance from Sprint and T-Mobile US in those two markets boosted their overall rank.

At the other end of the scale, Omaha built its poor showing on the back of last place finishes in network reliability and text performance; El Paso took the last spot in network speed and data performance; and Reno was No. 125 in call performance.

Among the nation’s five largest markets in terms of population, New York City came out at No. 74 on the list in terms of commercial cellular performance; Los Angeles at No. 89; the already mentioned Chicago at No. 2; Miami at No. 72; and Philadelphia at No. 39. RootMetrics added that Denver was the lowest ranked “large-sized” city coming in at No. 118 overall, dragged down by poor network speeds and data performance.

RootMetrics last week released carrier performance results for the first half of the year across the nation’s 50 busiest airports, with Verizon Wireless ranking the best or tied for the best at 29 locations. T-Mobile US came out No. 2 in the report with a top score or tied for a top score at 20 airport locations. AT&T Mobility was No. 3 with 13 awards, while Sprint finished a distant No. 4 in not garnering any top ratings.
