ZTE picks Radisys to power VoLTE, VoWi-Fi and more

Goal was to standardize media processing into one platform

Communications service provider ZTE is working to deploy value-added services like voice over LTE, voice over Wi-Fi and other media-intesive applications, and has joined with Radisys to standardize virtualized media processing.

The idea is for ZTE to accelerate deployment time of the new services by standardizing the processing platform using Radisys’ MediaEngine. This also serves to streamline the upfront capital expenditures associated with bringing the media-intensive services live.

ZTE Chief Architect of Core Network Deployment Yan Wei stressed the importance of network function virtualization to achieve scalability.

“Mobile operators are deploying [NFV] to bring the benefits of the cloud to their networks, such as scalability, increased efficiencies and reduced costs. To enable our mobile operator customers’ transition to an NFV environment, ZTE is migrating its IMS solutions and VoLTE core network service offerings to a cloud architecture, driving an important requirement for virtualized media processing.”

ZTE provides the world’s largest carrier, China Mobile, with IMS core, among other solutions; the company has a 20% market share in voicemail with operations throughout China, India, Latin America and Europe.

“ZTE is a long-time customer of Radisys, having deployed Radisys’ hardware MRF portfolio for many years to provide the critical media processing for our value-added services, such as voicemail and ring-back tones, used by more than 600 million subscribers around the world,” Huang Xiaobing, director of the VAS product-planning department at ZTE, said in a statement.

He said standardized IP services delivery on one platform was a strategic move. “This will allow ZTE to rapidly deploy new interactive multimedia services such as VoWiFi and WebRTC, while reducing our customers’ total cost of ownership.”

Radisys VP of MediaEngine and corporate marketing Grant Henderson said the move from a major player like ZTE validates the importance of tier-one providers to standardize media processing with an eye on “reduced cost of ownership with virtualized deployment flexibility.”

Radisys also does a lot of work in both small cells and distributed antenna systems wireless access technology.
