#MWC15: Alcatel-Lucent small cells focus; Telefónica IoT

BARCELONA, Spain – Alcatel-Lucent continues to focus on being a leading provider of high-speed mobile broadband services using small cell technologies across Latin America. In a meeting with journalists at this week’s Mobile World Congress, Osvaldo di Campli, president of the Caribbean and Latin America regional unit for Alcatel-Lucent, claimed that governments should invest in broadband plans in order to enhance connectivity throughout the region. He said currently Alcatel-Lucent counts 17 small cell contracts in 12 countries.

“Internet of Things”: Telefónica I+D and the Korean operator KT are leading a project within the GSMA designed to create a common ecosystem for the exchange of contextual data that can integrate data from connected objects. Both announced at last week’s Mobile World Congress event a strategic partnership to promote the adoption of FIWARE, an open initiative aiming to create a sustainable ecosystem to grasp the opportunities expected to emerge with the new wave of digitalization caused by the integration of Internet connectivity. Telefónica and KT said they will work together to develop models of data standards for connected objects and devices in the future in order to accelerate the definition of standards in the development of applications connected to the IoT.

Wi-Fi: Italian equipment vendor Italtel said it has partnered with a Latin American operator to provide its voice over Wi-Fi solution. Rafael Soares, marketing manager for LatAm at Italtel, provided details on the partnership and commented about the upcoming deployment of VoWi-Fi in the region.

Award: The governments of Brazil and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan were recognized by the GSMA with Government Mobile Excellence Awards due to achievements in driving growth in the use of mobile services and maximizing the socio-economic impact of the mobile industry in their respective countries.
