Global Telecom: Bharti Airtel picks up 2.5M subscribers, Essar bows out in style

Bharti Airtel adds yuMobile customers

Bharti Airtel has successfully integrated 2.55 million yuMobile customers into its network. Airtel is now the second-largest operator in Africa, with a customer base of more than 8 million and a 26.6% market share.

Essar Global Fund Limited announced it is bowing out of the telecom business after completing the deal, which included the sale of Telecom Kenya Limited, operator of the yuMobile telecom service. Telecom Kenya Limited sold its network, IT, and offices to Safaricom, while Airtel acquired the customer base.

The total value of the deal is an estimated $120 million. Essar has completed monetizing its telecom businesses for a combined value of $6 billion.

China Mobile’s gaming, music firm starts operation

Migu Culture Technology has officially started operation. Migu is based within China Mobile headquarters in Beijing, and was set up in November.

Migu features music, video, reading and games among other products.

Vodafone India customers can get iPhone 6 with no money down

Vodafone India launched the no money down iPhone plans today, which require customers to sign a 24-month contract. Customers can receive an iPhone 6 plan with no money down starting at around $60 month. The plan includes local calls, text messaging and 3G of data.
