3G subscribers still outnumber LTE subscribers worldwide and today Nokia Networks said it has developed a software solution that it says can significantly boost smartphone performance on 3G networks. High Speed Cell FACH is Nokia’s name for three 3GPP standards that Nokia says can work together to cut smartphone-generated network signaling by up to 80%. Live network trials of the software were conducted on the commercial 3G/HSPA network of a major European operator using test devices fitted with Qualcomm processors and modems. Nokia says that devices in the test achieved increases in browsing speeds of up to 20%, increased response time by up to 65%, and reduced power use by 40%.
Nokia said that High Speed Cell FACH efficiently handles small data packets generated by apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, and will supplement its existing suite of software tools to reduce smartphone signaling.
At this time commercially available smartphones on the market do not support High Speed Cell FACH, but Nokia said that it is supported by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. The solution is part of Nokia’s WCDMA Liquid Radio software suite.
