Software is becoming an increasingly important part of telecommunication networks and deployments as both wired and wireless carriers look to add functionality to operations while increasing simplicity and reducing costs. RCR Wireless News is keeping an eye on recent developments through its weekly “Software” wrap up.
—ItsOn continues to roll, announcing this week an update to its Smart Services Platform as well as an investment from Cisco Systems.
ItsOn claims that its Smart Services Platform 2.0 is the world’s first to support both network-based and device-based service plan creation and policy management in a single platform. That ability is said to make it easier for mobile operators to manage operating business processes and improve the customer service experience.
The updated platform includes support for all mobile devices running Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android operating system, and it operates in a virtual environment.
“Operators can design and deploy new services, refine them with real-time beta test analytics to optimize user experience and profitability, and launch to keep pace with changing market opportunities, geographies, channels or demographic segments,” the company explains. “All of this is done in weeks versus months or years.”
ItsOn’s advances also drew the attention of Cisco, which participated in the company’s second and final tranche of its series C equity financing round. The latest investment round also included funding from an undisclosed investor.
ItsOn previously accepted a $12.5 million series C investment tranche led by Tenaya Capital while reserving the second tranche for an “investment by an industry investor with complementary products and vision.” ItsOn said it would use proceeds from the latest investment for sales expansion beyond the United States.
Sprint earlier this year announced a deal with ItsOn to use its cloud-based virtual network platform to power “personalized services,” that eventually was announced as a new offering from prepaid provider Virgin Mobile USA.
—Overture recently announced new members to its Harmony ecosystem of hardware and software targeting network function virtualization deployments. Those new members include Certes Networks, Infovista, Kapsch CarrierCom and Red Hat.
Overture launched the Harmony program in June, claiming the move was designed to ensure compatibility between NFV solutions being provided by different companies. The initial launch included partners Wind River, 6Wind, Aeroflex, Brocade, Dell, EnterpriseWeb, Intel, JDSU, Metaswitch and Qosmos.
“Our service provider customers continue to ask for open architectures, vendor cooperation and open interfaces, and we are committed to each of these,” explained Mike Aquino, president and CEO of Overture.
—AT&T launched its Security Resource Center, providing support for inforsec specialists, IT managers and senior security leaders tasked with enterprise security needs.
The platform includes threat intelligence, which is designed to provide real-time alerts and information on potential threats; discussion communities that include interactive information on security issues; personalized content that allows users to “build their own reading list” and follow specific security experts; and a mobile application for accessing the platform.
