Mobile Minute: The Mobile Minute is sponsored by SpiderCloud Wireless. Dish Network is giving a new meaning to the term “cord cutter” with its latest pay TV innovation: a set-top box that connects to the Dish Hopper via superfast 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Dish is the first pay TV company to offer 802.11ac but it is not the first to offer a wireless set-top box. DirecTV, which AT&T plans to buy, has a wireless set-top box on the market, as does AT&T itself. Joey is the name Dish uses for its set-top box, so the new box is of course called the wireless Joey. It costs $50, and each Joey client is an additional $7.00. The $50 access point can support up to three clients. In other Wi-Fi news, carriers in the UK may be leapfrogging U.S. carriers when it comes to Wi-Fi calling. For more on that see today’s video below. |
