RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian carrier Oi has conducted LTE trials in five cities located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Oi’s technology consultant Alberto Boaventura said the trials were done in the 2.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz bands. “The frequency bands [that will be auctioned] are complicated for LTE,” he noted, during his session at Informa’s LTE Latin America event this week.

Oi’s trials had three phases. The first one comprised standard compliance, tests and systemic tests. “The first phase was very exhaustive, testing latency, single user throughput and cell capacity,” Boaventura said.
The next one was focused on feature tests, while for the last one Oi conducted outdoor performance tests in the cities of Macaé, Cabo Frio, Araruama, Teresópolis and Itaguai. “We checked the potential of the cell range,” he said.
Oi tested LTE with about 100 users and developed a technology topology end to end. In the final analysis, carrier noted that indeed, the user experience was improved. “The results were very surprising.”
Among vendors, Boaventura citied Dell, Gemalto, Huawei, JDSU, Nokia Siemens Network, Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent and ZTE.
