Brazil’s Oi starts tests at 450 MHz

Brazilian carrier Oi announced that it has started tests in the 450 MHz band for broadband services in rural areas. The tests, conducted in cooperation with government regulator Anatel and the Ministry of Communications, will initially be in the city of Morriston, 74 kilometers from Curitiba (Parana state).

The testing is part of Oi’s contribution to the public consultation No.4/2012, promoted by Anatel. In the first demonstration, a cell site is set to send data and voice to the School of Rural Municipal Marumbi. The school will be equipped with a Huawei FT 8090 modem connected to a telephone terminal and two computers. AsiaTel is also partnering with Oi on the testing.

Oi said a team of 20 employees has been involved in the tests.

The carrier also noted that further tests will be conducted to measure items such as signal propagation and power levels in the 450 MHz band across regions with different topographies, including the cities of Antonina and Realeza, both in the state of Parana; in Sao Sebastião and Sobradinho, in the Federal District; and in Manaus, capital of Amazonas.

The objective of the tests is to observe the transmission performance for this frequency in three reliefs typical of the Brazilian territory: mountainous areas, flat extensions of the central highlands and the Amazon forest.
