AT&T names first five LTE markets

AT&T Mobility (T) plans to bring Long Term Evolution technology to its first five markets this summer. CTO John Donovan said Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio would be first up for the carrier’s new LTE network. All but Atlanta are in the top 10 U.S. cities by population.
AT&T plans to light up at least another 10 markets with LTE later this year and is committed to covering 70 million people with LTE by the end of the year. Of the 20 4G devices that AT&T plans to add to its portfolio this year, some will be LTE capable, Donovan wrote in a short note about the carriers evolution to 4G.
“We’re positioning to deliver a great mobile broadband experience in the near term with HSPA+ and a growing LTE footprint,” Donovan said. “We’ve invested $75 billion in our wireless and wired networks over the last four years – more capital invested in the United States than any company in any industry. And we plan to invest $19 billion in our wireless and wireline networks and other capital projects this year. The investments we’ve made to evolve our mobile broadband network in recent years, plus what we have planned for the future, put our customers in position to benefit fully from a host of coming mobile broadband innovations.
