Latest spat in war of words over who reigns supreme in new 3-D technology
Is the war of words between Samsung Electronics and LG Display heading for the courts or will it be settled peacefully?
According to industry sources yesterday, Kim Hyun-suk, executive vice president of Samsung’s visual display business, sent a letter to LG apologizing for an abusive term he used to describe LG personnel during a meeting with reporters on March 8.
At that time, Kim was explaining the difference in the 3-D TV technologies of the two competing companies – Samsung’s active shutter glass technology versus LG’s Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology. He employed the insult against LG engineers who claimed their technology was better.
Soon after the incident, LG sent the letter to Samsung demanding that it confirm if the media reports about the alleged remark were true. It warned that it might consider taking legal action against Kim for defaming the engineers.
LG has acknowledged that it has received a reply from Kim’s letter. LG said it will decide on countermeasures after reviewing the letter.
