Bits & Bytes: Telefonica launches BlueVia; Ericsson announces money service; and more

Telefonica SA announced that it has launched a developer community, BlueVia, which will operate across Telefonica’s global footprint. BlueVia will build upon the foundations of Telefonica’s existing developer programmes, O2 Litmus in the United Kingdom, Open MovilForum in Spain, Movistar Developers Platform in Mexico and Plataforma do Desenvolvedores Vivo in Brazil. BlueVia will offer developers 70% of revenues from any services sold in market, as well as opening up new incremental revenue streams from API transactions. Read more here.

Ericsson announced the launch of Ericsson Money Services. It is a business line that aims to make sending money person-to-person as simple as sending an SMS. The launch of this new business follows two years of thorough preparation and proof of concept in Europe and Asia. Through Ericsson Money Services and its Money Interconnect Service, mobile operators, financial institutions and other service providers, wishing to extend their offering with mobile money services, can easily be connected to a real-time, cross-border, cross-currency switching network. The Ericsson Money Services portfolio will be available for demonstrations at the Ericsson Hall (Hall 6, La Fira) during Mobile World Congress (MWC) to be held in Barcelona, Spain, Feb. 14-17.

Bridgewater Systems, provider of intelligent broadband controls, announced that during 2010 it surpassed management of more than 10 million devices supporting a range of machine-to-machine applications. Bridgewater enables mobile operators to offer a variety of M2M services by securely managing M2M connections on 3G and 4G networks using intelligent broadband controls such as device service control, dynamic policy control, and device identity management.

GenTag Inc. and its partners announce the commercial availability of a low-cost near field communication cell phone for RFID sensor applications, including consumer diagnostics. The technology integrates NXP’s PN544 NFC IC technology with the full open ISO NFC spectrum and was co-developed in Asia in collaboration with NXP and other partners. It is directly compatible with the disposable NFC sensors and devices produced by GenTag and therefore can be “bundled” with specific diagnostic kits or sensor markets. The phone is also directly compatible with NFC – Facebook type social network applications (direct phone-to-phone data exchanges).

Qualcomm Innovation Center Inc., subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., announced the launch of the AllJoyn open source project. It is a peer-to-peer technology framework that enables ad-hoc, proximity-based, device-to-device communication without the use of an intermediary server. AllJoyn is designed to easily allow developers to create apps and services that leverage P2P connectivity, which can be established using any short-range radio link such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, on any AllJoyn-enabled device without the need for a 3G network or Wi-Fi Internet access point. Qualcomm will demonstrate AllJoyn P2P technology at GSMA’s Mobile World Congress.

Teleca, a supplier of embedded software solutions for the consumer electronics, automotive and mobile industries, announced the development of an Android platform solution for use in SiriusXM’s next generation vehicle, portable and home products. Teleca will be demonstrating its comprehensive line of solutions at
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
