Aruba’s Labs effort promotes all-wireless workplace

Aruba Networks Inc. launched a new laboratory to promote research on Wi-Fi networks and the all-wireless workplace. The company’s Aruba Labs will be comprised of developer and research programs and an environmental-friendly focus.
The developer program will aim to add new functionality to Wi-Fi networks, and the research aspect will explore the boundaries of wireless networking.
“Aruba Labs follows the open-source community model with regard to investigating boundaries of Wi-Fi technology,” Keerti Melkote, Aruba’s co-founder and CTO, said in a statement. “The lab’s toolkits enable student, faculty and corporate research to create and test new Wi-Fi applications using an off-the-shelf platform.”
The lab’s Green Island Project will examine the economic, environmental and social ramifications of the all-wireless workplace and provide a forum to discuss its impact on individuals, institutions and society.
“IT organizations have an opportunity to improve the environmental footprints of their IT infrastructures, and an even bigger opportunity to make a real contribution to helping the enterprise contribute to tackling climate change,” said Simon Mingay, VP of Gartner Research.
Melkote said businesses that switch to an-all wireless workplace reduce energy and copper consumption.
The company’s developer program is open to all qualified interested parties, while the research program is available by invitation only. The Green Island Project is open to all K-12 and higher education institutions that are Aruba customers and to commercial ventures on a case-by-case basis.
Aruba Networks sells wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions.
