Sprint Nextel Corp. is quietly pulling the plug on its PCS Mail service.
A longtime service that never seemed to find an audience, PCS Mail offers a carrier-branded e-mail address (@sprintpcs.com) for users looking to exchange messages from computers or Sprint phones. The carrier informed customers via a page on its Web site that it will discontinue PCS Mail at the end of this year.
While the struggling operator offered no explanation, the move is likely a cost-cutting effort that seems unlikely to offend many subscribers. Sprint Nextel is encouraging PCS Mail users to move to services from other providers – including AOL, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo – and offers instructions on how to transfer address books and saved e-mails to the new accounts.
