Nokia Corp. today said three new, quad-band handsets would reach market in the third quarter, but said nothing about possible deals with GSM carriers in the United States.
All three offer 850/900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies, raising the possibility of future placement at AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA Inc. and/or alternative channels.
The handsets appear to be part of Nokia’s effort to get products into the U.S. market, where its share has slid dramatically over the past two years.
The Nokia 6600 will arrive in both clamshell and slider form factors and the Nokia 3600 is a slider. The 6600 clamshell allows users to double-tap the exterior to start or stop an outer display for calls and messages, offers a 2-megapixel camera and will retail unsubsidized at about $430. The 6600 slider also offers the double-tap feature, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Nokia Maps and GPS. It will retail at about $390.
The 3600 slider emphasizes its music capabilities (a 4 GB memory card is optional) and its colors, materials and finishes and is the first Nokia product to offer background noise cancellation. The camera is 3.2 megapixels and the handset offers a TV-out jack for connecting photos and videos to a television monitor. Nokia Maps is included. Retail price is about $274.
Nokia also will offer its new BH-803 Bluetooth headset, no price given.
