AT&T goes over the air with Napster song downloads

AT&T Inc. has partnered with digital music provider Napster to offer AT&T customers over-the-air access to more than 5 million full-track songs.

The carrier said that, starting in mid-November, Napster Mobile will allow customers to download five tracks a month for $7.50, with five free songs initially for customers who choose this option, or buy songs a la carte for $2 apiece. The service will send a track to both the user’s handset and the customer’s PC for no additional charge. Users can preview 30-second clips of the songs prior to purchase.

AT&T will kick off the new service by featuring content from Matchbox 20 and the band’s new album, “Exile on Mainstream,” including live concert content and ringtones.

The carrier also unveiled two new music applications: MobiVJ, a streaming video service which allows wireless customers to stream video content from up to eight channels to their handsets for $7 a month. VIP Access, the other new service, is described as a “mobile fan club” that for $3 a month allows users to search artist biographies and discographies, sample new music, receive SMS alerts and participate in polls, along with the option to purchase related content.
