Google Inc. continued its head-long charge into mobile with the acquisition of Finnish start-up Jaiku.
Jaiku, like rival Twitter and a handful of other “microblogging” companies, allows users to post short messages about what they’re doing from PCs or mobile phones. The year-old Finnish company delivers users’ messages to other social networking sites and mobile devices, and supports instant message services from AOL, MSN and Google.
“We plan to use the ideas and technology behind Jaiku to make compelling and useful products,” Google Product Manager Tony Hsieh posted on Google’s blog. “Although we don’t have definite plans to announce at this time, we’re excited about helping drive the next round of developments in Web and mobile technology.”
The acquisition comes amid growing speculation the company could introduce a Google-branded handset or its own wireless service.
