Wells Fargo & Co. and Visa USA said today that they are in a three-phase trial to determine the type and method of mobile payments favored by consumers.
The first phase, with Wells Fargo employees in a lab, concluded in April. The bank and credit card company plans to conduct the second phase this summer with Wells Fargo employees in retail locations using Visa’s payWave technology. The third phase will be a public trial with Wells Fargo/Visa cardholders in the fourth quarter.
The companies did not provide information on the location of the public trial.
The parties’ technology choice is Near Field Communications, or NFC, and the applications being tested include secure over-the-air delivery of payment account information to mobile devices, mobile payments in stores and restaurants using payWave technology, mobile coupons and account management services.
