Infrastructure awards wrap-up: Alcatel-Lucent, GigaBeam, Meru and more

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

    Cellular

  • China: Alcatel-Lucent and Datang Mobile won contracts with China Mobile to provide TD-SCDMA equipment under a trial network expansion program. Datang and Alcatel Shanghai Bell will provide technology for expansion of the carrier’s 3G network in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
  • Indonesia: Alcatel-Lucent said it has been chosen by Indosat to deploy a GSM/EDGE network for the carier.
    Miscellaneous
  • Bahrain: GigaBeam Corp. said it received a $1.4 million contract to provide WiFiber wireless links and installation services for government buildings.
  • Belgium: Meru Networks said it deployed a wireless local area network system for the Brussels Regional Informatics Centre at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel/Universite libre de Bruxelles in Brussels.
  • Europe: Vodafone Group selected L.M. Ericsson to manage distribution of spare parts for its mobile networks for several of its major European operating companies, including in Germany, Spain and Portugal.
  • United States: ERF Wireless, which provides encrypted wireless networks to the banking industry, said its Enterprise Network Service subsidiary signed an agreement with the Jeff Davis Bank in Jennings, La., to provide a secure VoIP system over the bank’s wireless network. Also in the United States, Motorola Inc. said it won a contract to deploy an 800 MHz trunked radio system for the city of Stamford, Conn., for its All-City Communications infrastructure. In addition, the Air National Guard chose Telos Corp. to develop its first-responder wireless capabilities as part of the implementation of deployable secure wireless local area networks for 25 of its active wings and regional training centers.
  • Worldwide: EMS Technologies Inc. said Alcatel Alenia Space awarded it a contract to supply RF transmitter power-combining assemblies for the communications payload of Globalstar II, Globalstar’s next generation of 48 low earth orbit satellites scheduled for launch in two years. The deal is valued at more than $5 million.
