Arlington County has selected EarthLink Inc. to build a Wi-Fi network throughout the Virginia county. EarthLink will own and operate the network, which will cover 26 square miles.
The Internet service provider will offer Internet access for some of the county’s nonprofit partners, and will create wireless hot spots at a number of Arlington parks, community centers and libraries.
“We’re excited to partner with EarthLink to bring a totally wireless capability to everyone who lives, works and visits Arlington,” said Jack Belcher, Arlington County’s chief information officer. “This service will create an amenity that will continue to distinguish Arlington as a truly world class community.”
EarthLink is one of the largest players in the burgeoning muni Wi-Fi market. The company has signed deals to build municipal Wi-Fi networks for a number of cities and counties across the country.
