Dobson Communications Corp. has introduced push-to-talk service for customers in Alaska through its Cellular One retail brand.
The company said it will be the first to provide PTT in the large, sparsely populated state; the service also will work in Hawaii and the lower 48 states, according to Dobson.
The carrier said it expects to offer PTT-compatible handsets for less than $100. The carrier plans to charge $20 per month for unlimited use of the service.
“Push to talk doesn’t replace traditional voice calls. It gives businesses and consumer and alternate way to stay in contact with co-workers, friends and family,” said Frank Franzese, senior vice president of sales for Cellular One. He added that Alaska’s oil and gas industry, construction industry and emergency services made the state a good candidate for launching PTT.
