MediaFLO gets trialed in Taiwan

Qualcomm Inc. announced that China Network Systems (CNS) and Taiwan Television Enterprise Ltd. (TTV) have signed an agreement to conduct a technical trial of the San Diego-based company’s MediaFLO technology in Taipei this month. The trial will feature four live channels of CNS content and up to three live channels of TTV content that will allow both companies to evaluate the capabilities of MediaFLO as they look to deliver mobile TV services to mobile users in Taiwan.
“Taiwan is at the forefront of new technology deployments and mobile TV is no exception,” CNS CEO Daniel Cheung said. “We are excited about MediaFLO and the opportunity for delivering advanced video services to our customers in Taiwan.”
The arrangement is notable in that Qualcomm largely dictates the content delivered via MediaFLO in the United States as it has developed its own partnerships with content providers and built out its own network on which the service will be broadcast. Elsewhere, Qualcomm is licensing the use of its Forward Link Only (FLO) technology and leaving the content deals and network issues up to its prospective clients.
Qualcomm is trialing MediaFLO in Europe and elsewhere.
“Mobile is a dynamic new platform for television content, and we are keen to offer customers the widest variety of choices to access TTV content,” said York Chiou, vice president of business development at TTV.
