LG turns to Ericsson for 3G mobile platform

Ericsson Mobile Platforms AB and LG Electronics Co. Ltd. announced that LG will license an HSPA platform from Ericsson for “ultra-small,” mass-market 3G phones.
Ericsson’s U360 platform includes a reference design, platform software, application-specific integrated circuits and development boards and tools, and is designed to allow handset vendors rapid time-to-market in developing small feature phones that can offer 3.6 megabit per second HSDPA, tri-band W-CDMA and quad-band EDGE/GPRS.
LG already uses some Ericsson platforms.
Interestingly, LG is making a bid to win the GSM Association’s low-cost 3G handset contract, which is designed to foster uptake in the 3G handset market. The contract winner will be announced Monday at the 3GSM World Congress.
