SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.-Although the future for WiMAX is bright in China, it faces several challenges, according to a new report from research firm In-Stat.
Barriers in to adoption of WiMAX in China include immature 802.16e products, competition from third-generation wireless and uncertain spectrum allocation, said In-Stat.
“WiMAX does have many advantages in cost, flexibility, and deployment convenience,” said Kevin Li, an analyst at In-Stat. “WiMAX is a data network access technology, which means no circuit switching (CS) domain is required, whereas 3G, the alternative technology, is divided into CS and packet switching (PS) domains, which carry voice and data, respectively.”
The firm predicted the WiMAX market in China could increase from 8,000 last year to between 1.2 million and more than 3.5 million in 2010.
