Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

    Cellular

  • Italy: Nokia Corp. said it signed a three-year frame agreement with Wind Telecomunicazioni SpA to supply a W-CDMA 3G radio network solution, including its Flexi W-CDMA base station and NetAct.
  • Turkey: Motorola Inc. said it has won an eight-year contract to upgrade, extend and manage Vodafone’s nationwide GSM network in the country.
    Wi-Fi
  • Bangladesh: Agni Systems Ltd., an Internet service provider in Bangladesh, has chosen Motorola Inc. to provide equipment for a phased WiMAX deployment that will provide wireless broadband access in Dhaka.
  • China: Motorola Inc. said the China Education and Research Network has chosen its HotZone Duo solution to provide public access for three campuses as part of CERNET’s campus Wi-Fi initiative.
  • United States: Tropos Networks provided Wi-Fi equipment for a multi-use network launched in Corpus Christi, Texas.
    WiMAX
  • Bulgaria: Proxim Wireless Corp. said Max Telecom Ltd. has selected its WiMAX product line and network management system to build a broadband wireless network.
  • Fiji: Alvarion Ltd. said Fiji International Communications Ltd. will use the company’s BreezeMAX product to offer WiMAX data services.
  • Japan: Nortel Networks and Toshiba Corp. are working with the Japanese government on a next-generation wireless trial that uses WiMAX solutions from Nortel to bring high-speed broadband services to the northern Tohoku region.
  • Taiwan: Nortel Networks said it will supply equipment for a WiMAX network in the northeastern county of Yilan for Chunghwa Telecom as part of the Mobile-Taiwan project.
    Miscellaneous
  • Philippines: Nokia Corp. said fixed line operator Eastern Telecom has chosen it to supply Next Generation Network core equipment as part of its network modernization initiative.
