Dobson closes on new Texas spectrum

OKLAHOMA CITY—Dobson Communications Corp. wrapped up its $25 million purchase of wireless assets and spectrum in Texas, which will expand the rural carrier’s footprint in the central area of the state.

Dobson subsidiary American Cellular Corp. made the purchase of assets in the Texas 15 Rural Service Area and 1.9 GHz spectrum in four additional counties, for which it received approval from the Federal Communications Commission.

The Texas 15 RSA covers nearly 12,500 square miles and a population of about 207,000 people. As part of the deal, Dobson picked up 25 megahertz of 850 MHz spectrum and 10 megahertz of 1.9 GHz spectrum in the RSA, plus another 10 megahertz of 1.9 GHz spectrum in Brown, Comanche, Mills and Tom Green counties. Dobson already provides wireless service to Brown, Comanche and Mills; Tom Green county is the location of San Angelo, the county seat and largest city in the region.

Dobson acquired the spectrum from Lone Star Wireless and Concho Cellular Telephone Co.
