Casual games lead in U.S., Telephia finds

SAN FRANCISCO—Mobile gamers in the United States continue to opt for puzzle and strategy games instead of first-person shooters and other console-type titles, according to the latest figures from Telephia.

Casual titles were the top four revenue-generating mobile games during the first quarter of 2006, the market research firm found, with Tetris once again leading all wireless games, generating 5.2 percent of mobile-gaming revenues. EA Mobile published six of the top 10 games, including the top four titles.

The firm said women accounted for 65 percent of the mobile-game market in terms of revenue. Women favor puzzle and strategy games, while men prefer action and adventure titles, the firm said.

“The casual nature of mobile games provides tremendous appeal to women, who are not traditionally hardcore gamers by console or online gaming standards,” said Kanishka Agarwal, Telephia’s vice president of new products. “The wireless industry has presented a hungry target audience willing to pay premium access to games through their cell phones.”
