Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

  • France: SFR said it launched its HSDPA network in Paris and southern France using equipment provided by Nokia Corp. The deployment was part of a radio network contract between the two companies that was extended last month.

     

  • Germany: Siemens Communications won a contract to supply Vodafone Germany with remote radio head systems for new W-CDMA base stations as well as on existing base stations.

 

  • Lithuania: Omnitel launched HSDPA service in the city of Palanga using equipment provided by Nokia.

     

  • Malaysia: TM Group subsidiary Celcom said it launched HSDPA service in Malaysia using equipment from Nokia.

     

  • Saudi Arabia: Mobily selected L.M. Ericsson to build an HSPA-enabled 3G network to expand its existing GSM network. The contract includes Ericsson’s Mobile Softswitch solution, radio, transmission and core equipment.

     

  • Turkey: L.M. Ericsson said it won a contract from Avea to expand the capacity and coverage of the carrier’s GSM network by the end of this year. The contract is valued at $85 million.

     

  • Virgin Islands: Cable & Wireless selected Nokia to expand its existing GSM network in the British Virgin Islands, including a GSM/EDGE base station subsystem and services including network planning, implementation, network optimization and post implementation care.

WiMAX

 

  • Brazil: The city of Porto Alegre said it plans to spend $1.5 million to build a WiMAX network. Procempa will be in charge of integrating the network, which will cover government offices and public buildings.

     

  • United States: AirBand Communications Inc. said it expanded its network in the greater Phoenix area with an 11th base station deploying pre-WiMAX equipment.

 

Miscellaneous

 

  • UAE: Andrew Corp. was selected to provide an in-building wireless system to enhance wireless signal coverage at the Dubai International Airport.

     

  • Worldwide: LGC Wireless said it is deploying its InterReach Unison system for Wireless Maritime Services to provide cellular service on cruise ships.
