Cisco teams with Intel on WLAN security

SAN FRANCISCO-Cisco Systems Inc. and Intel Corp. are teaming to improve solutions for wireless local area network reliability and security.

Business Class Wireless Suite is set to provide enhanced roaming and Voice over Internet Protocol and reinforces previous efforts between the two companies to develop the Cisco Compatible Extensions program for wireless LAN client interoperability.

In addition, Intel will join the Network Admission Control program, a Cisco-led industry effort to help customers identify, prevent and adapt to security threats, while Cisco will join the Intel Active Management Technology program, part of Intel’s Digital Office initiative, which makes new levels of information technology manageability possible.

“Our expanded strategic alliance with Intel on security and wireless demonstrates our commitment to deliver unified solutions that drive higher levels of usability, performance and security for our customers,” said Charles Giancarlo, chief developer at Cisco. “Business Class Wireless aims to provide the best wireless experience by enabling a better user experience for Intel clients running over Cisco wireless enterprise infrastructure. Security continues to be a major concern for organizations, and with Intel representing the first silicon manufacturer to join the NAC industry effort, client devices can continue to be treated as trusted elements on the network.”

Cisco and Intel said customers can expect Cisco NAC and Intel AMT to be compatible in the fourth quarter of 2005, and Business Class Wireless Suite features will be available from the first quarter of 2006.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
