Sprint PCS’ bundled voice plans top global list of ARPU drivers

Sprint PCS’ bundled voice plans topped Analysys Research’s list of the world’s top 10 wireless services based on its ability to produce unmatched levels of voice usage and twice the voice average revenue per user achieved by operators in Western Europe.

Analysys Research said its independent listing takes into account offerings that exhibit high market potential, effective implementation and suitability for reproduction in other markets.

“The top 10 services exemplify real opportunities for mobile operators to grow both voice and data revenues,” said Alastair Brydon, co-author of the report. “Our analysis of the services reveals valuable lessons about tariff structures, price levels, marketing, bundling, the role of third parties and the use of 3G networks.”

U.K.-based third-generation operator 3 posted the second- and third-highest ranked wireless service offerings with its ThreePay prepaid service and mobile video offering. MmO2 Ireland’s short message service garnered the fourth spot on the ranking followed by NTT DoCoMo Inc.’s FOMA 3G service at No. 5 on the list.

Vodafone Group plc’s worldwide Vodafone live! service was ranked No. 6 on the list, followed by T-Mobile’s TM3 service in Germany, Xing’s ringtone download service in Japan, In-Fusio’s worldwide games offerings, and MmO2’s Genion service in Germany.

“We have evaluated these wireless services on the basis of identifying the real-world deployments that are proving most successful and that offer the prospect of widescale adoption,” Brydon added. “The top 10 services have achieved their success in a variety of ways, including novel pricing and marketing of existing services, such as voice and SMS, new service concepts that exploit the capabilities of 3G-such as mobile video content-and the outsourcing of content delivery of large-scale specialist third parties as in the case of In-Fusio.”
