Gay community content goes mobile with m-Qube announcements

PlanetOut Inc. will team with mobile technology company m-Qube Inc. to bring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender content to wireless phones.

Boston-based m-Qube will develop and distribute Gay.com and PlanetOut content and subscription services including news, ringtones, images, games and access to community-themed information services and event calendars. An online mobile storefront will launch in the next few months, the companies said, and the offerings will expand to WAP sites and JAVA and BREW applications in the United States and foreign markets. Also, PlanetOut has secured the short code PRIDE (77433) for a text-messaging service.

“The m-Qube team has successfully promoted mainstream branded content for major brands and content providers worldwide, and we intend to fully leverage their experience as well as their relationships with all of the major carriers,” said Mark Elderkin, president of PlanetOut Inc. “This is yet another example of how we are extending our state technical infrastructure and taking advantage of new distribution opportunities to generate incremental revenue for the company, while serving our members in new ways.”

m-Qube also said it will deliver mobile content from the hit series “The L Word” on a new mobile storefront from the cable channel Showtime. The sho.com wireless store offers music from the lesbian-themed series as well as cast photos and the show’s logo.

Showtime’s mobile initiative will also feature text-messaging campaigns, live chats and on-air mobile polls. Content from other network series will be added to the wireless storefront in coming months.
