CANNES, France-Two global carriers announced contracts for content charging systems Tuesday.
Lucent Technologies Inc. and NetSpira Networks said they have provided Singapore’s MobileOne Ltd. with a content-based online charging system for GPRS and UMTS services.
M1’s system will allow it to identify the type of data traffic being sent and received across its third-generation network and introduce service-differentiated rating and charging based on a number of criteria such as the application, content type and content provider.
“Content-based charging is clearly a promising business opportunity for mobile data operators,” said Paul Higgs, vice president in the Asia Pacific region for Lucent Worldwide Services.
The two vendors also signed a regional teaming agreement to extend the joint offer created for the M1 project to other operators. Under the terms of this agreement, Lucent Technologies will distribute NetSpira’s Enhanced Charging Solution product in the Asia-Pacific region and will offer the integration expertise of Lucent Worldwide Services to deploy the online service-differentiated charging solution.
In a separate deal, Megisto Systems Inc. said Irish mobile operator Meteor Mobile Communications has selected Megisto’s Mobile Services Delivery System to enable it to provide prepaid data and content charging.
Meteor is a subsidiary of Western Wireless International and delivers a number of data services such as multimedia messaging service alerts, picture messaging, GPRS Internet access and downloadable Java games.
“Differentiated MMS charging based on type, size and location of recipient are all new ways in which Meteor can continue to lead the Irish mobile market in offering attractive subscriber packages,” said Gordon Saussy, chief executive officer of Megisto Systems.
