Singapore airline’s Internet service includes wireless carrier tie-in

SINGAPORE-Connexion by Boeing has signed yet another airline for its high-speed, in-flight Internet service with Singapore Airlines (SIA). The deal also includes service provider agreements with two Singapore wireless carriers, SingTel and StarHub.

The partnership with the carriers will enable airline passengers to use their existing wireless service user identifications and passwords to access the mobile Internet service in-flight. Passengers will then receive their in-flight Internet access billing with their wireless bills.

SIA plans to initially offer the Connexion by Boeing service on its Singapore to London route in the first quarter of next year and eventually expand the capability to selected flights worldwide.

Two initial pricing plans will be implemented and will vary depending on flight length. A flat-rate pricing option will provide unlimited access to the Internet for $29.95 for long-haul flights (more than six hours), $19.95 for medium-haul flights (between three and six hours) and $14.95 for flights less than three hours.

Under the metered pricing option, flights less than three hours will receive a 30-minute starter package for $7.95 with rates of 25 cents per minute thereafter. For flights longer than three hours a 30-minute starter package will be $9.95 with 25 cents per minute thereafter.
