Nextel requests extension for bill-of-rights compliance

WASHINGTON-Nextel Communications Inc. has requested an extension of time to comply with certain provisions of the telecom consumer bill of rights approved by the California Public Utilities Commission in May.

The compliance extension sought by Nextel involves various rule subparts with a Dec. 6 deadline. Wireless carriers have to meet other benchmarks throughout next year. Nextel said more time is needed for Web site, invoice and billing system redesign. The Reston, Va., firm told the CPUC that compliance with the rules at issue can be accomplished by February, October, August and December next year.

Nextel said filing the extension request does not preclude it from challenging the bill of rights.
