Alcatel wins $100M UMTS contract in Libya

PARIS-Alcatel Corp. said it has signed a $100 million contract to supply Libyan carrier General Post and Telecom Co. with GSM/GPRS and UMTS infrastructure and services.

Alcatel said this will cover the carrier’s radio access and core network solution, targeting 2.5 million users. The deployment is scheduled for completion by the end of 2005.

The carrier will be able to offer services such as mobile video telephony and conferencing, online games, live TV over mobile, a third-generation video portal, video messaging, Webcam access, live sporting events and instant messaging, according to Alcatel.
