Casio, Hitachi detail phone venture

TOKYO-Casio Computer Co. Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. outlined the details of their mobile-phone joint venture, first announced in November. The companies said their new phone business will be called Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications Co. Ltd. and will develop, design and manufacture phones for Japanese and overseas users.

The companies said the new joint venture will bring together Casio’s high-density surface mounting, image processing and application software with Hitachi’s high-speed data communications technology, device application technologies and secure systems design.

The deal comes after several other high-profile joint ventures, including Ericsson’s teaming with Sony Corp. and Fujitsu’s joint venture with Mitsubishi Electric Corp. for NTT DoCoMo FOMA phones.
