Cometa to target Seattle with Wi-Fi

SEATTLE-Cometa Networks said it will launch more than 100 new hot spot sites in the Seattle area Sept. 25, and it expects to activate an additional 150 locations in the area by the end of this year. The company, which was formed in late 2002 with plans to offer wholesale Wi-Fi services, added that the deployment would include both single-site access points and broader Wi-Fi zones that will include coverage of retail restaurant and public areas.

AT&T Wireless Services Inc., which was named the premier service provider for the Seattle launch, Sprint Corp. and iPass Inc. are also expected to provide Wi-Fi service with Cometa in the Seattle area. Sprint announced a roaming deal with Cometa as part of the company’s plan to offer Wi-Fi services to its customers in more than 2,100 locations by the end of this year.

Cometa said the Sept. 25 launch would be part of a nationwide event called “One Unwired Day” in which mobile PC users can access a free trial of public wireless Internet access at all Seattle Cometa Hotspots as well as thousands of hot spots nationwide.
