Mobile operators urged to end price war in Shanghai

BEIJING-The Shanghai Telecommunications Administration has urged the local subsidiaries of China Mobile and China Unicom to end a price war they are waging through promotional offers.

Shanghai Mobile said it would halt its promotion soon, but Shanghai Unicom vowed to continue the price cuts. Both operators are scrambling to attract new users to their General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and CDMA services respectively.

According to the Shanghai Daily, customers of Shanghai Mobile who pay the 60 yuan (US$7.25) monthly GPRS service fees for three months in advance will get a 40 yuan (US$4.83) discount on local calls for each of the three months.

Shanghai Unicom is offering subscribers who chose a 108 yuan (US$13.05) monthly package 145 minutes of free local call time.
