TORONTO—Bell Mobility said it will begin offering services based on Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java technology by early next year.
The carrier joins the likes of Sprint PCS, Nextel Communications Inc. and NTT DoCoMo by supporting Java technology, which many analysts agree is becoming one of the most important technologies in the wireless data industry.
Separately from Bell Mobility’s announcement, Sun Microsystems said it will release version 2.2 of its Java Card technology, which the company said makes it easier to program Java Card applications and improve interoperability between smart cards from different vendors.
“Smart-card solutions based on Java Card technology are being rolled out to users throughout the world for use with applications that require high levels of security, such as financial services, government, personal identity, telecommunications and e-commerce,” said Tracey Stout, vice president of marketing for Java and XML Software at Sun Microsystems.
