Pakistan to review CPP regime

NEW DELHI, India—The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said it is seriously reviewing the calling party pays (CPP) regime for fixed-to-mobile calls to provide relief to the general public.

PTA Chairman Shahzada Alam Malik stated in Islamabad last week that a final decision will be announced after a thorough discussion with all the concerned parties and stakeholders. According to the CPP agreement, the package is to be reviewed every year, therefore, “PTA is reviewing the package and hopefully will reduce the tariff soon,” he added.

Currently, a caller from a fixed phone to a mobile phone pays 3.68 rupees (US$0.06) per minute, of which the fixed-line company PTCL retains 1 rupee (US$0.02) and cellular mobile operators get 2.20 rupees (US$0.04). The remaining 0.45 rupee (US$0.01) goes for government taxes.
