Lawmaker blasts industry for E911 Phase II requests, Cingular wins APCO praise for waiver

WASHINGTON-A major public-safety advocate on Thursday said she likes what she sees of the recent enhanced 911 Phase II waiver request filed by Cingular Wireless L.L.C. At the same time, however, Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) blasted the industry as a whole-including Cingular-for asking the Federal Communications Commission to waive the impending Oct. 1 deadline for Phase II implementation.

Eshoo urged the FCC to deny all of the industry’s waiver requests although she did leave room for the FCC to “ferret” out reasonable requests.

While Thera Bradshaw, president of the Association of Public-safety Communications Officials International Inc., said she supported Eshoo’s statements, she said Cingular was the industry leader by saying it wanted to work with public safety to deploy E911 Phase II.
