CDMA subs hit 90M by 1Q, CDG says

COSTA MESA, Calif.-In its semi-annual update, the CDMA Development Group said it believes that thus far, 2001 has been a successful one for CDMA technology, as proven by rapid subscriber growth, deployment of two third-generation CDMA2000 networks, by Korea’s LG Telecom and KT Freetel, and expansion of worldwide roaming cooperation.

According to the CDG, in the first quarter of 2001, CDMA subscribers hit 90 million, a 58-percent increase since last year. The CDG predicts that with Telecom New Zealand and China Unicom’s adoptions of CDMA in the second half of the year, growth will be even more marked.

“The CDMA community has achieved several historic landmarks this year including the deployment of the world’s second- and third-generation networks in Korea,” said Perry LaForge, CDG executive director.
